Religious Education Committee
The RE program for church youth is designed around five goals:
  • To provide a sense of community where the participants give each other their mutual support and trust.

Children at First Parish are import and and at least once a month part of the main service is devoted to meeting the spiritual needs of young people.
For more information contact the Director Religious Education.

  • To encourage individuals' spiritual growth as they join in the celebration of life.

  •
  • To gain an understanding of Unitarian Universalism - its structure and heritage, its principles and purposes.

  •
  • To gain an understanding of other religions and sources of inspiration.

  •
  • To provide opportunities to put Unitarian Universalist principles into action.

The children's church year is developed to reach these goals from the nursery  through high school age.  The program begins with loving care and creative play that provides a safe place for infants in the church family.  Programming continues into the preschool level with the focus on "Growing Times,"  a curriculum rich in experiences that presents the world as a place full of wonder and things to explore.

Continuing into the kindergarten and first grade level, the focus is on "At Home in Our World"  offering children experiences that foster "at home" feelings as individuals, toward each other, church and celebrations and he natural world.  Second through fourth grade take part in the "Love and Help" curriculum, learning about Unitarian Universalism beliefs and values.  They are also enriched by "Timeless Themes", a program developed  from Bible stories.  The children's church program reaches the fifth and sixth grade utilizing "Shake Hands with the Bible, delivering a means to explore our Judeo-Christian heritage.

Finally, grades seven through twelve continue their church experience within the "Coming of Age" program.  This is implemented through several curricula including "Talk with Teens", "Playing with Fire", "Beyond Pink and Blue", "On the Path" and "Messages in Music". Plans are under way to create a Youth Group.

By working as a group, the young people are able to enhance their church experience through social action, continued spiritual growth, interaction with Unitarian Universalists in other communities, thus gaining a sense of UU identity.
